Dating from 1150 The Church of St Mary has had a rather turbulent past which includes playing an important role in the English Civil War. Anne Bronte's grave is situated at the Northern end of St Mary's churchyard, beneath Scarborough Castle walls.

AYTON CASTLE

The ruins of the three storey castle can be found to the East of the village. The tower dates back to 1390. There are the remnants of the inner and outer bailey ramparts with the grass covered foundations of an inner gateway. The site is visible from a public footpath which passes the castle from Castle Rise.

SCARBOROUGH HARBOUR

It is located in Scarborough's South Bay, adjacent to the popular tourist beach and at the foot of Scarborough Castle Hill. The harbour consists of three piers enclosing an outer and inner harbour. The outer harbour is used mainly by leisure vessels and the inner harbour by fishing and passenger vessels. The outer harbour is tidal and almost dries out at low water. There are three piers, The West Pier, completed shortly after 1325, The East Pier, completed shortly after 1811 and The Vincent Pier, completed in 1752. All three piers are listed structures. The layout of the harbour is such that all the piers, wharves, slipways, and landings, with the exception of the North Wharf and a section of the West Pier, are readily accessible to both the general public and the various industries using it. The North Wharf and the adjacent section of the West Pier are used exclusively by the fishing industry. The lighthouse is located on the Vincent Pier. The first reference to a lighthouse on this location occurs in 1804. A signal flag was displayed by day and a light by night when depth of water was not less than 3.7M. In 1914 the lighthouse was seriously damaged during the bombardment of Scarborough by German cruisers and the tower had to be dismantled. It was rebuilt in 1931.

SCARBOROUGH MARITIME HERITAGE CENTRE

Situated a short distance up the main road from the historic harbour, the centre is crammed with lots of interesting exhibits and information about Scarborough's fascinating past. The volunteers are mostly local people, including ex-fishermen and they have lots of local knowledge. Entrance to the Centre is FREE and is open Wednesday to Sunday 11am until 4pm. The SMHC is run entirely by volunteers and public donations.

BETTON FARM VISITOR CENTRE

A local charity, Basics Plus renovated Betton Farm, a visitor centre in 2010. It provides additional skill training and employment for disabled adults. The visitor attraction now has upgraded tea rooms and restaurant, a farm shop, camping and caravan site, children's animal farm and play park, a honey bee exhibition, and woodturning and pottery craft workshops.

Situated just four miles from Scarborough it can boast an indoor honey bee exhibition which is an experience for all the family, young and old. PEASHOLM PARK

The municipal park opened in 1912 and became a favourite venue for galas, displays and exhibitions. The park was extended to include Peasholm Glen, a natural ravine, in 1924. Attractions include an artificial boating lake, where mock naval battles are staged, a putting green and a tree walk.

At the Stained Glass Centre, Valerie Green and her staff maintain a tradition that has existed for over a 1000 years. The production methods are the same today as they were then. If you visit the Stained Glass Centre you can learn about the history of stained glass and browse in the showrooms, full of stained glass panels, lampshades, mirrors and gifts. Residential stained glass courses are also available if you would like to learn more about the craft.

For the adventurous try our trail which covers both Whitby Museum and Pannett Park. The trail takes you on a voyage round the museum and also on a tour of the newly restored Pannett Park. There is something for all ages in our extensive collections. There are the toys & dolls and the birds and mammals in the natural history section. Large Jurassic reptiles mounted on the walls in the geology area and look at the fossils collected locally. The Pannett Park Tearoom is open from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm from the spring half-term to late autumn, Tuesdays to Saturdays inclusive (closed on Sundays).
